HP presario V6000 XP2005

A friend gave me this laptop because its old and the hard drive FAILS the BIOS disk check.
After 3 times I refused to reinstal windows and told him to get a new HD or computer.
Where should I get a new HD so I can give it to my girlfriend and get favors.
Should I just go to frys and buy a HD or is there a cheaper solution.
I should be able to get the restore CD.
