Looking for a "naked" (no OS) laptop

Any sources you can recommend will be appreciated.

Why not just get a good name brand laptop with the most basic OS and wipe it?

Because I want to be able to check with the vendor directly on what drivers are supplied and their OS compatibility. I plan to set up the machine to dual boot Windows 2000 and Ubuntu.

I doubt you will be able to get any vendor to certify Win2k compatibility. You best bet would be to get a winxp laptop and attempt to "downgrade" to Win2K. Stay as far away from vista as possible as those drivers won't work on winxp, much less win2k. As for linux compatibility, go for an intel centrino or later intel mobile wireless chipsets with intel integrated graphics.

Ironically, I think you will find a "no OS" laptop will be more expensive than one with windows installed on it for many reasons which is why most people just get windows preinstalled and wipe the drive or dual boot when installing linux.

As an option you can buy the laptop chassis by itself (includes screen, keyboard, and mobo), then buy all the other hardware yourself. I made a laptop for my friend that way.
