Laptop reformat

I have a 2 year old HP dv5000 laptop that has just had a hard drive failure. Now I take it that i can't just put a new hard drive in it and install the recovery disks? I saw mention in another thread that i might be able to borrow a copy of window XP pro and install using the number on the green sticker under the laptop. Has anyone tried this?
I am assuming that HP will want an arm and leg for a genuine HDD.
The drivers appear to be available on the hp site.

It should work, thats what the recovery disks are for. And hard drives aren't proprietry, they are just standard drives.

I will certainly try that and I hope you are right. I have been led to believe that there is some sort of marker on the HDD "Tatoo" was the word used. I would of course be simpler if i could just use the recovery disks.

I may be wrong, but I think the only thing that's tattooed is the bios.
