Laptop Battery Life Question
I'm thinking of getting a laptop for the upcoming school year, and I was wondering how Turion X2s and Pentium Dual Cores do on battery life. Also, does either one outperform the other as far as being a faster processor? I just don't think of a pentium as being good on battery life or very fast. Thanks for your help.

The best option by far for laptops when it comes to battery life is the Core 2 Duo. I'm not sure exactly how the Pentium Dual Cores fare, but I'm guessing they have reduced or no power management. AMD mobile processors have mediocre power management at best. As for speed, I think that C2Ds and Turions are similar.

Yeah, I know that C2Ds are the best, but that's just not in my budget. Thanks for the help!

New Dell Vostros with 1.4Gig C2Ds can be configured (downgrade the battery and RAM) at the Dell site for around $600
edit: i configured one with 1GB of RAM, regular battery, 1.4Ghz C2D, and took off the webcam and it came out to $524. $549 for 2GB of RAM.

To glc and xraycatj, I didn't know you could get a C2D for that price, but how well do those lower speed processors perform?

They are more than enough for everyday multi tasking.

You can't expect stellar performance with any laptop in that price range, but everything is relative. You have to balance priorities against budget.

Yeah, I don't need amazing performance or anything like that; just something that will be able to do more than one thing at a time and have good battery life.

If it's a Core 2 Duo, it will multitask well. Of course, keep in mind that it shuts off one of the cores while on battery to prolong operating time.

I multitask quite well on my old single core P4 on this desktop. You can't have it all.

I don't think you want to override shutting off the second core while on battery. If you do, you will take a serious battery hit. I think it is probably possible, though.

All laptops use similar power management to preserve battery life - shutting cores down, slowing clocks down, etc.
