Have fun

Its debut product, the $499 PowerPad 160, is a rectangular, 3/8-inch-thick battery that sits underneath a laptop and connects to the AC adapter jack.

ps. Food for thought-> Purchase a second or third battery that matches the original one...

A modern notebook would be something like the Lenovo Thinkpad X61s, I can get roughly ~9 hours, with a 8-cell battery.

The new Dell Latitude E6x00 series are supposedly rated at 19 hours with a 9-cell battery, but I'll believe it when I see it. I agree that if you want good battery life, just get a couple batteries. If you don't want to turn off the computer while you swap them out, get a laptop with a modular bay and put a battery designed for the bay in there to keep the computer running while you swap.

BTW, what's wrong with Windows 2000? The only things it's missing compared to XP are a couple of updated programs, Windows Firewall, and a fancy blue taskbar...
