HDMI port on laptop

hey guys,

So i like the specs on this laptop (see link) at buy.com because it comes with a blue ray player. The question I have though is that it says the max. resolution for this laptop is 1440 x 900. true blue ray is 1920 X 1080p so does that mean i wont even get the max resolution of the blue ray movie if i use the laptop screen?

also, this laptop comes with a hdmi out port. So can i basically just use this laptop as a blue ray player for my 1080p TV? Again, will i even get 1080p picture because my laptop is only 1440 x 900?

The 1440x900 is just the max resolution of the screen. The laptop's video card will be able to output full HD resolution for Blu-Ray.

also, i see laptops with just an hdmi out port and no blue ray drive. so what is this used for? Could i just buy an external blue ray drive and be able to play it on my laptop at max res.? Thanks aalaron.

HDMI isn't just for blu ray, it is just a good way to connect TV's to computers. Yes you can use an external drive to watch Blu ray at mac resolution, just not on the laptop screen. But since the laptop scrren is the size that it is, you wouldn't notice the difference.

so why are manufacturers including blue ray drives in laptops and even computers if you can't even notice the difference in 1080p on screens so small?

Blu-Ray is not just for movies. Just like a standard DVD, it can be used for files.

Well, most of the reason is marketing. Even though Blu-Ray can be used for files, computer manufacturers like being able to say their products are "HD-capable!!!"
