do i have to replace the power jack?

hi, i just ordered a new (oem) charger for my laptop presario v2000 (v2405us) but i get the same issue where i only get charge when i apply pressure to the connector and hold it at a certain angle.. this also causes the charger tip (metal part) to heat up to scalding temps. just to be sure is it an issue with the power jack (soldered to the motherboard) or could it be something else (battery, etc)?

Sounds like a loose power jack. Probably a bad solder joint which will cause high resistance and heat build up.

That same thing happened to a friend's laptop. It was recommended to replace the power jack altogether, but I just took it apart and resoldered the existing jack and it was fine again. It just had a cracked solder joint where the jack hooked to the board.

Quite a common problem I have been lucky and have found disassembly instructions on most laptops I have worked on , just be sure to have small containers for different screws and mark them. some laptops have the size of the screw marked where you take them out example 4mm ,3mm...................

disassembled, resoldered, reassembled, and laptop is good as new now!

also this is my first time taking apart a laptop or soldering. just wrote down every single step that i took, cause indeed there were dozens of different little screws...

i bought my soldering gun at radio shack for $10 + special kind of soldering iron for electronics.
