Ummm... what's your price range? "Decent" can be a little subjective. Are you looking for decent in the $500 - $1000 range, $1000 - $1500, or $1500 - plus?

P.S. That's US dollars, so if you want in pounds or euro's, specify.

Dell makes some good laptops. I believe Asus has been doing good lately as well with their laptop offerings.

It is hard to beat Dell for bang for your buck. I think of laptops as somewhat disposable and don't count on them lasting much more than a year.

That doesn't necessarily have to be true. My Thinkpad is 8 years old and still running strong.

I'd stick to Lenovo Thinkpad...or if you haven't ruled it out, an Apple MacBook. Check with your university for any specials they may be offering - often times, college/university computer stores offer special pricing or special bundles for incoming freshman.

If you are looking at a ThinkPad, make sure to check out the Dell Latitude series too. Dell's Inspiron models are cheaper and thus the build quality and sometimes the features aren't up to par. The Latitude are basically Dell's ThinkPad competitors. I think that this time around, the Latitude E6400 and E6500 are better than the ThinkPad T400 and T500 -- everything from better features to more ports to a better keyboard. I could have gotten an equivalent T400 for a couple hundred dollars cheaper than my E6400, but the E6400 was a much better overall package IMO, and worth the extra money.
