What's the point?
Doesn't really seem practical.

why not ? My Dell has a fan on the bottom .. if I can put a fan under the laptop it will cool it nicely ... I have extra fan with 12v ... so , does that idea fit ?
(I know I know .. there is cooling pad for laptops .. but what harm if I tried speacial thing and for FREE - Im cheap man ![]() )

No, that won't work, because USB ports are 5 volt, not 12 volt. They also cannot put out more than 500 milliamps.

What is the USB charger used to charge? Most phones, etc. have 5 volt or less batteries.

Hello,
I would have to think that if you are using your laptop for any extended hours. Your probably plugged into a AC wall outlet. Look for an old wall transformer from a cordless house phone base. Usually their rated around "10-12VDC @ 800ma". The only downside is now you have to have 2 AC outlets available (1st for laptop & 2nd for cooling fan). Keep in mind the natural airflow of your laptop, make sure your fans push or pull the air along with the PC's natural flow. If you vent the wrong way, you'll create a dead air pocket or stalled airflow between the laptop and your cooling base. Just my 0.02 cents... Last edited by caesar; 11-01-2008 at 05:40 PM. |

A USB port initially only supply's 100mA to a given device, at which point if the device needs more power, it has to request it via the data pins. A fan, lacking the ability to do this won't be able to request more power so will have to be limited to 100mA. I think this is correct.
