difference between display adapter and plug and play monitor

I have a laptop and the screen is busted. i just want to use the external monitor. I got it working, but was wondering....what is the difference between teh display adapter and the plug and play monitor that is in the device manager? Do I need both of these? even though the screen on the monitor is broken...it does look like it's on even though the output (as in Windows) shows on the external monitor.

The 'display adapter' is the video card, while the monitor is the screen.
