General Protection Fault

My buddy's Dell Inspiron 6000 is about 2 to 3 years old. On boot up it gets a screen with the following:

TRAP 0000000D GENERAL PROTECTION FAULT

LOADING PBR 2…DONE
TR=0028 CR0=00000011 CR2=00000000 CR3=00000000
GDT LIMIT=03FF BASE=00017000 IDT LIMIT=07FF BASE=00017400

FLAGS=00010006 NOCY NOZR INTDIS DOWN TRAPDIS
EAX=623E4454 EBX=00000005 ECX=004314B9 EDX=6F6C2E6F DS=0010 ES=0010
EDI=00024558 ESI00060E84 EBP=00060E78 CR0=00000011 FS=0030 GS=0000

I have run from repair the "chkdsk /r" where it found errors. but on reboot, I still get the error.

I ran "fixboot" and that didn't help.

I then ran the windows repair to restore the original settings without losing info. that didn't work.

could the hardrive be bad? I don't know what else to try.

Try running the Hitachi Drive Fitness test on the drive;

Run the short test first, if it passes run the long. If it passes the long the drive is good. If it fails either test replace the drive.
