Not really, that is a very *old* notebook (ie, new in 2003) for that price:

When you can pick up something like this that has a dual-core processor for $379 and is brand new, I really don't think it's worth it:

1.66 gigahertz processor is kind of small though isn't it? I guess I"m used to the regular machines "not laptops" where anything under 2.6 gigs of processor speed seems rather slow now a days.

That's a newer, more efficient DUAL-core, not a 5-year-old single core with outdated architecture. Not saying it's the best, but for your price range ($350) it's much better.

Ebay is selling this. Seems kind of good, although I'm sure people will keep bidding.

Dell Latitude D410
$201.58

12.1 inch screen
intel pentium M, Centrino
1.73 Gig processor
2.048 gb memory
40 gb harddrive
intel (R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG network connection.

I'm curious about this wireless connection. I hope it connects the way my D620 latitude does.

I've used that Intel wireless chip for two different laptop upgrades; for a Compaq/HP NC600 and for a Dell Latitude C510, both worked fine with the upgrade. The range of the wireless and the speed was good.

ok .. from my own experience , DUAL-Core is better .. I had Pentuim 4 @ 3.06GHz and a Dual-Core @ 1.6GHz .. Dual-Core is an honored winner .. trust me !
And , if u are a normal user (I mean by that , just surfing the net , watching a movie , doing some word processing , NO hardcore gaming or 3D/video editing processing ) a 1 GB RAM with windows XP will be enough .. wont run out of memory ever ..

however , I recommend you to get a new laptop .. there is no warranty on used laptop , they might die next day u buy them (happened to a freind .. the laptop was clean and good .. but died next morning - powersupply and harddisk died - ) .

if u considered adjusting ur budget , u will have a new and semi-modern laptop with a warranty and u will be happy ..

I cant help u on picking a new laptop right now .. but here is some tips to get a new one with cheapest price possible !

1) screen size : this affect the price , and I think 14" to 15.4" is fair for a low budget (if u wanna watch movie u can buy a cable to connect the laptop to ur TV , unless ur laptop is already support that )

2) CPU : as I said , dual core is better choice even at lower clock speed. so , AMD CPUs are cheaper than Intel .. and there is no difference since u are normal user .

3) RAMs : 1 GB is cool with XP .. if u got Vista , install XP if u like it.

4) Integrated Graphics Card : Intel Integrated chips is better for the budget . ATi or nVidia will just cost u more .. o f course better performance for gaming .. but u should know that ur low budget wont suit gaming laptop ..

5) Harddisk : yep , less amount of GBs is cheaper ! but basically u will have at least 80GB to 160 GB with a nice price .. so I would say its one of the advantages when u get a new laptop ..

.. at the end such system might cost 450$ to 600$ .. for laptops brands , I believe that Toshiba laptops are expensive , and Fujitsu are the cheapest

hope this could help u .. cheers

I wouldn't waste my money on a Celeron machine even if it is new and dual core. Unless you're going to use it for email, web, and minor office tasks, it won't be able to keep up. Besides that, 1gb of RAM isn't going to handle Vista even with Home Basic. Throw in the shared video memory and you'll be crawling in no time.

That said, the laptop you're looking at Legend is nearly identical to my wife's. She can watch movies and burn music (no dvd burner) though it's definately not a workhorse. If you aren't willing to spend the $600US on a new machine, I'd offer them $300 for that one and wait for them to agree. My guess is they'll take it. It's about what I was going to ask if we sell my wife's machine. Take the extra cash and get yourself more memory.

Good luck.

Used laptops are not a good value at all these days with brand new ones with current technology and a warranty going for under 500 bucks.

There is NOTHING wrong with a new dual core Celeron for a budget laptop. However, 1gb ram and Vista is not a good situation. 1gb is fine for XP, but Vista needs 2 gigs.

If battery life is not a concern, you can find new AMD-based laptops REAL cheap.

I have 26 minutes left. I think this might be a reallly good deal. What do you think? a little concerned about the 512MB of Ram though. I'm going to put this on a separate post as well so people don't get confused.

Optical Storage CDRW/DVD
Video 14.1" SXGA TFT active matrix

Separate posts are actually more confusing. Please refrain from making them. Thank you. I'm going to close the other one.

made a purchase - thoughts

ok, I made a purchase. Remember this is going to be for basic use "internet surfing, yahoo games, email, fantasy football". It's for my husband.

I know that I have heard 2 GIGS of ram is good but this only came with 1 gig. I also know it's only a celeron and I can't tell if it's a dual processor or not?

But I do know a litte bit about computers so I thought for $399 and new that it should be good.

What do you think?

I got the base package. Dell Vostro 860

Thats fine for a low-cost option. 1GB of RAM should be fine since Windows Vista Home Basic doesn't have all the extras that suck up RAM in the other versions of Vista.

That's a single core. 80 bucks more would have gotten you a Pentium dual core, 2gb ram, a DVD burner, and a bigger hard drive.

1gb dimms are $12 and 2gb dimms are $22 from Crucial. It has 2 slots.
