laptop to cell phone
Am going to be traveling this year a couple of times. Need to be able to connect to internet to pay bills, transfer funds, etc. Planning on buying a low priced laptop and have a Verizon cellphone acct.
If the laptop has a modem, how can I use it for a dial-up connection thru my cellphone? How can I connect the two together? Haven't seen any cables to do so. Are there? Can they be bluetoothed together. Have seen USB bluetooth adapters. Have never used WiFi cafes and don't really trust them for transferrring such data. Hooking thru modem only uses regular minutes instead of more expensive "data transfer" minutes. Dave |

Just enter your zip and it will show you cards that can connect to your laptop. I believe there is a monthly fee for that though. Otherwise, you would have to tether your phone to your laptop using bluetooth I believe, and it will use data minutes.

with the Verizon broadband card, you have to do the 2 year agreement thing. $60 a month. Its a great service, but if you are only going to use it a few times a year, its not worth the money. I would figure out how to tether your phone to your laptop. You could get a data package for the month you plan on traveling. If you already have a smartphone, its build into your plan already. You connect your phone to your laptop using a cable or bluetooth.
I may be wrong, but I dont think your latptop's modem can help you any. New laptops dont even come with modems, though you can buy USB modems. |

Most cellphone operators block the use of a tethered phone as a dialup modem. You have to use the data plan.
All I use when I travel is wifi. |

I also use Wi-Fi. Every hotel/motel that I've stayed at the last several yrs. has some kind of internet service and many businesses have wireless service also. I believe most McDonalds have it now.

I used my Blackberry as a modem while I was moving to SC until I got settled in. I simply called VZW and had them put the service on my account and installed the software on my notebook than took off the service when I didn't need it no longer. Speeds are not that great but just paying bills, online banking, etc it does just fine.
