notebook HD keeps spinning

Hi all,

I have a 3 yr old HP notebook with an 80GB, that everytime it is powerd on it takes a very long to load some of the applications.

Windows XP loads fine, but the HD keeps spinning and if I click on an icon to open an application it takes long to load and can hear the HD working HARD

I have disabled some non-essential apps at start up through msconfig, run CCleaner, defragged etc. but still no luck.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Have you scanned it for viruses and malware?

Shadowpr: There are 51GB of space available, 1.5 GB RAM

GLC: No I have not done either, but will be doing it right away.

Thanks!

Has removing the malware made a difference?

I was reading on another forum that it could be the RAM causing the issue

www.memtest.orghttp://www.memtest.org/#downiso

Run diagnostics on the ram to. Just download the iso, and burn it as an image.

I still would also run hd diagnostics on it.

If you can't find any hardware issues, it may be time for a nuke and pave. The OS is probably corrupted.

Thanks glc!

I'm thinking about replacing the HD now, but the notebook can only handle up to 120GBs and the OS is on a separate partition, so have to hunt for the recovery CD as well!

Unbelievable!

You do get one shot at making your own recovery CD's. Did you already do that?

You don't open the partition - there's a utility in your start menu for making them.
