upgrading to a different processor

hey guys, I am still trying to customize my dell studio 17 laptop, right now I am thinking about the P8400 processor with 2.2 Ghz, 1066 Mhz FSB, 3 MB L2, but I am also thinking about upgrading to P9400 with 2.5 Ghz, 1066 Mhz FSB, 6MB L2, I would like to know is it over kill, for everyday use, video editing, or even a little gaming? thanks for all your help guys.

Have you ever replaced a cpu on a lappy?

You might notice a little perfromance increase but you also end up with an expensive spare part.

no, I have never replace a processor on a laptop before. I am customizing the laptop thru Dell. I take it by your answer, it's probably not worth it to upgrade?

Let your pocket book be your guide

I would probably grab the faster one on a new pc order versus upgrading an existing machine like I originally thought you were doing.

Going from a 2.2 to 2.5 is not a whole lotta difference, but the 2.5 comes with an additional 3mb L2 cache; that's gonna be noticeable in heavy processor applications.

How much more does Dell want for the upgraded processor? What are yoy wanting to do with your new laptop?

If I remember correctly, about $200 for upgrade (I don't have the exact number in front of me), and I would use the laptop for normal everyday use, school. I probably have to do some video editing this semester, that's why I am thinking of upgrading.

I'd have a hard time dropping 2 bills on that upgrade.

Getting on the net, homework, and simple projects aren't gonna make much use of the additional processing power you'll get from that upgrade. the place where you'll see the most difference is in your video projects, since this doesn't seem to be your main concern-I'd guess you'll be just as happy with the 2.2ghz.

Also as 'GLC' said: that's a healthy chunk of change for that upgrade.
