Laptops in Cold Temperatures

Does it hurt a laptop (especially the battery) to be in sub-freezing weather?

I have one on order for a friend, & he asked if shipping in extreme cold weather would cause damage.

It shouldn't hurt it but be sure and bring it to room temp before using it.
