Laptop Blank Screen

I have a friend who has asked me about this laptop which appears to have a blank screen its a Sony Viao PCG - F403 is it the back light or something more, not seen it yet so can't say what the screen looks like, just making some prior enquiries.

Shine a flashlight on the screen and see if you can see a faint image. If you do, the backlight is burned out or the inverter is toast. If you don't, test by plugging a monitor into the VGA port.

Thanks your comments, can't see image with torch but it does work with VGA output.

Have not looked any further yet also usually you can see white light on screen edges which is not there.

The screen assembly probably needs to be replaced.
