I recently bought a new Gateway laptop that runs Vista. when working at my desk with the power supply plugged in, the cooling fan in the laptop cycles on and off every 5 seconds or so. It is really annoying and can't be good for the life of the fan.
How can this be fixed?

Is it literally 5 seconds on, 5 off, 5 on, 5 off, etc.? Or does it just briefly spin up every once in a while? If it's the latter, that's normal -- in fact, it's not unusual to have the fan running at high speed all the time.
