Asus Aspire 5520

Hi all, I recently replaced the HD on the my laptop(one in thread title) and am now trying to load XP back on. The laptop had Vista Home basic x32 when I got it but now I am trying to put on XP media center 2005. The asus site has drivers for XP Home basic so I assumed that my media version of XP should work. The laptop will pick up the disk and kick in setup and go through all the way to the point of formating the partions you create but after being formatted, an error statement comes up saying that either the disk is damaged or is incorrectly plugged in. Now does this mean that my new HD is junk or am I doing something wrong? Thanks and sorry for the paragraph haha.

Might be your SATA/IDE controller going south, that is very common with this series a hard drive test can illiminate the doubt. That is an Acer by the way not an Asus. XP drivers work on all versions of XP. What brand is the new hard drive?

My bad, got typing to fast the last time, it is an Acer. The new hard drive is a western digital scorpio black I believe. How can I test the new HD to see if it is the problem? The reason I even put a new one in is because the laptop would start to boot and than come to a messege that said there was a memory read error. The new messege I get while installing the OS does say something along the lines of making sure I have HD switched on correctly, I assume it means jumpers but I dont have any on it. If this controller is going bad, is it something I can replace?
