pay as you go?

I'm in the process of getting a mobile phone. I want a pay as you go. I don't want to have to pay for min I don't use. A small fee for the phone is OK.
I have read about a hundred sites on all the differences. And am more confused now then before.
Ive read "Mobile Phones With Free Gifts: Grab the Offers" offering xboxes etc... (theres gotta be a catch!

I am really lost here and the info is overwhelming.
I want a "free" phone, with min that I pay for only if I use them!
Any help in this area is GREATLY appreciated.

Go over to Walmart and buy a $20 AT&T Go Phone. Pick the billing plan that will work best with your planned usage. If you don't like it, use up the minutes and let it expire, throw the phone in the recycle, and try another carrier.

There is some service out there where you only pay a per day fee. If ou do not use the phone no fee. The minutes are unlimited on the days you use it. Not sure of the idea behind it.

The closest to ideal pay as you go is AT&T. You buy minutes and have 90 days to use them.

That's another AT&T GoPhone option. $3/day on the days you use it. Wouldn't work for me, as I use my phone pretty much every day, but usually not a lot, but I can see the merit in it for some people.
