smokin dell III-800 notebook very slow

issue: slow PIII 800 notebook
installed: win x sp3- w/latyest udates
equipment: Dell X200 notebook (PIII-800, 256 ram, 40gb hdd)
---------------------------------------------------------------------

any way to speed this machine up--takes 4 minutes to boot (to desktop)..hdd thrashing..i know 256 is a bit low for ram but other machines have run fine with same setup--winx just freshly installed.,removed several startup programs (via ms config) and set paging file to 356-356 mb. no viruses. maybe its thye xp udates?...if so--how do i remove them??

------------------------------------------------------------------------

thanx.

256 megs of ram is more then a bit slow....I'd let Windows manage the pagefile.

If you are going to manually manage the pagefile, set it to 3x the system ram.
