HP Pavilion will not detect Hard drive

Hello,

My Pavilion DV1000 notebook will not boot. On start up it does not detect the hardrive. I bought a new hardrive and installed it. When I tried to install windows xp it said no hard drive was dectected.

I reset the Bios to the defaults and I ran the hard drive test utility which passed.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks

It has an IDE drive doesn't it?

What's the history behind the first drive? Was the pc running fine and it just quit? Did someone spill liquids on the pc?

Did you initialize and format the new drive?

It is SATA

The system was fine one day and would not boot the next.

I could not do either with this laptop. The windws installation did not get thet far. I did connect it to my desk top via a usb SATA adaptor. I was able partition and format the drive.

A new twist. I tried installing version of VISTA I bought for my Desktop. Vista Installed no problem. I reformated the drive and tried XP again same trouble. XP will does not detect a hard drive.

I do nat have the recovery discs, is it possible the recovery disc sets up the computer to install xp and will not work with out it?
Seems unlikely but I am stummped

XP requires a driver on a floppy disk to install on an advanced SATA controller. Vista does not. The recovery disk has the driver built in. This is because the controller is in the AHCI mode by default, and XP has no native AHCI drivers. If you can change the controller mode in the BIOS to standard IDE emulation, XP will install without a driver.

You should be able to order a recovery disk from HP.
