Acer Aspire 5670 battery recharging problem

Using XP Home. Battery stays charged when laptop is on A/C power. With battery removed laptop works fine. When laptop is on battery it works fine. When I plug in A/C power to recharge battery it does not recharge. The battery charge light comes on and then goes off. If any programs are accessed the battery charge light goes out. It does this a few times and then stops charging all together and the battery continues to be depleted until it it dead. If I shut the laptop or put it in sleep or standby the battery charges fine. This is a new battery and A/C adapter. It did the same with the old battery.
I hope someone can tell me what is causing this.
Thanks,
-Steve-

It sounds like the AC adapter can't provide enough power to run the computer and charge the battery at the same time -- one or the other, but not both. If you're using the recommended adapter (I can only find replacements, mostly 90W) and it still can't provide enough power then something inside the machine is pulling too much (or thinks it is). I'd talk to customer service, especially if it's still under warranty.
