HP Pavilion DV9000 Screen Dim And Won't Display On External Monitor

I have a HP Pavilion DV9000 that you can see an image on the LCD screen if you shine a light on it,but it doesn't show a picture on an external monitor even though it turns the monitors on when you push the FN + F4 key.Can a bad LCD interter affect the output to an external monitor?Any help is greatly appreciated.Thank You very much!

Well, you either have a bad inverter or backlight, but that shouldn't affect an external display - unless it's trying to act as a dual display with the wrong settings.

Could the laptop have a bad VGA port?Bad video card?Wrong video driver? The monitor light turns green, and the screen lights up,but there is no picture,it's just gray. How do you change the settings for the dual display?Fix the inverter,or backlight first? Then go to the control panel?Thank You very much!

Get yourself a REALLY STRONG light, and see if you can see the screen well enough to check the bios settings - the external port may be turned off in there.

I turned it on again to check the settings in the BIOS,and the screen lit up!But for only about ten seconds, and then it went dim.The BIOS didn't have any settings for the VGA port, but I did manage to get the VGA port to work after I clicked on the Nvidia icon in the control panel.I don't remember what I clicked on,as it was pretty hard to see with just a flashlight. As far as the laptop LCD,sometimes it would light up on bootup a few times in a row,and sometimes it wouldn't.The length of time it stayed on varied from a few seconds to no more then maybe fifteen seconds. After the first time it lit up,it picks, and chooses when it wants to light up.Could it be a loose connection,or is it still between the inverter, and backlight?I tried moving the screen back, and forth, and tapping on the LCD back cover, and down by where the inverter is,but it didn't help.Thank You very much!

Inverter, backlight, or both.

After testing with some spare bulbs,it turned out to be a bad bulb in the LCD.I just swapped out the whole screen, plastic, and all with one from another laptop,as the LCD screen itself had a dual bulb setup, and everything was different,so I couldn't use any of it.Thank You very much for all of the help!
