Vaio keyboard replacement
My keyboard on my sony vaio VGN-FW275D has been getting progressively stickier over the last year or so, and after recently spilling a whole 'thing' of pizza dipping sauce (garlic flavoured fwiw) on it, I've decided to replace it. Cleaning doesn't seem to be an option (I tried, but the stickiness is pretty deeply embedded).
So I need an opinion on what to do. My warranty won't cover this (no spillages). Do I repair it myself? Bring it in to futureshop and pay the probably overpriced cost for a new keyboard? Go to a smaller store? Any advice as to which is cheaper in general? Something to note is that it currently has a french-canadian keyboard. I've searched for replacement keyboards but all I can find is US english ones, but I don't know if it's as easy as simply swapping them. Like would just buying and installing (something I could do with instructions but am kind of clueless otherwise) this get the job done? http://cgi.ebay.ca/Genuine-New-SONY-...d=p3286.c0.m14 Yet another issue is the faceplate that covers the above part. The keys are different from mine, and might not fit in the 'faceplate' that covers it. Any help appreciated. Thanks! |

You can actually toss keyboards in the dishwasher. Just make sure it throughly dries out before using it.

hahah
I dissected my laptop, removed the keyboard, and in the process I broke a crucial little nub on the back of the enter key, so knowing I had to buy a new one anyway (they're only like $20 on ebay), I decided to give the dishwasher method a try. It's in right now, hah. I guess we'll have that question answered relatively soon... Serious note: I can't find a french-canadian version anywhere, will installing a us layout keyboard go smoothly with compatibility and stuff? |

You will have to change the regional and language settings in control panel, and get used to the different keys.
