Adding a wireless card
I need to get a wireless card for my laptop. I don't if I should get a PCMCIA card or an internal Mini PCI card. Is one better than the other? Thank you.

From my experience internal Mini PCI is always better than PCMCIA. Performance and range are better on an internal card and it's not obtrusive like the PCMCIA cards. Usually you can find internal cards for less as well. The drawbacks with internal cards is that you have to get specific card for your model of laptop (whereas PCMCIA cards work with any laptop that has the PCMCIA slot) and they require more work to put in (need to open up laptop, insert card, attach antennas and close up laptop).

1. The Compaq Evo uses a proprietary form factor optional internal 802.11b module. It has 2 standard CardBus slots.
2. I can't find out what's inside the eMachine, but it has a standard CardBus slot. 3. The Presario was available with a standard Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG but I don't know what other components, if any, would be needed to get one installed and working. It has a standard CardBus slot. With all that in mind, I'd probably get some CardBus cards, and I'd try to match the brand and type with the brand of the router they will be using most often. |

As far as I know any laptop that had internal wireless as an option has the wireless antennas pre-installed, so all you need would be the mini PCI card. Might try looking on ebay for the compaq mini pci card; something like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/Compaq-Presario-...d=p3286.c0.m14. The other laptops you listed are quite old and there wasn't that much standard wireless equipment when the laptops were made, so probably the best option for those is to get a PCMCIA card. If you can't match the brand of the PCMCIA to the brand of the router, D-Link and Linksys are good options.
