Gps

I might be buying a GPS and would like some sort of buying guide, recommendations etc. I know practically nothing about them, so I don't even know much what I want except maybe something portable (to move from car to car and put away for security reasons), voice directions and that might be all I can think of off the top of my head.

Do you travel often enough that making a 200 to 400 dollar investment will be a really good idea?

For starters-> Google: GPS Reviews

The prices on the Garmin 255W have dropped considerably. $199.00 in Canada.
I have this unit and it is excellent.
Wide screen
Text to Speech
Choice of ABC or QWERTY keyboard.
Number pad is on the same page as letter keyboard.
6 million POI's
SD expansion card slot

This is a really good GPS for the price

If you have or plan to get a smartphone, Google Maps and LiveSearch are free and do turn-by-turn directions (though not spoken). I believe GarminXT does spoken instructions.

Other than that, my "buying guide" for GPS is: buy Garmin.

The only thing I do not like about Garmin is the cost for map updates.

I agree GLC. Their map update prices are ridiculous.
