While on the internet using my laptop, I can be in the same room as the router (LinksysWireless-G w/ speedbooster), or I can be upstairs. Or we cold be at a hotel, and the signal just drops.
Any ideas what could be done to resolve this? I am running Win Xp serv pack 3.

thanks for the reply, however walls and floors are not an issue, as it also 'drops' when in the same room!

Does it have an internal wireless adapter or are you using a card or USB adapter?

glc: his laptop looks like is internal wireless adapter as the review at CNET listed.
http://reviews.cnet.com/Dell_Inspiro...-30521464.html Dell offers the Inspiron 8600 with the Intel Pentium M, which has speeds up to 1.7GHz, and the 128MB Nvidia GeForce FX Go5650 graphics chip. (The Inspiron 8500, in contrast, ships with older parts, such as mobile Pentium 4-M processors and the 64MB Nvidia GeForce4 4200 Go graphics chip.) Rounding out its lineup of excellent specs, the Inspiron 8600 includes a 7,200rpm, 60GB hard drive; 2GB of 333MHz SDRAM; and integrated dual-band antennae that support 802.11a or 802.11b/g wireless signals. that review is post on 2003, so I think is the wireless adapter problem, either goes to the end of its life or the anntenna contact point with the card. I have also seen Dell laptops with internal wireless cards that do this - and a driver update has fixed it.
By the way, just because it has the antennae doesn't necessarily mean that it shipped with the mini-PCI wireless card. |

My understanding / knowledge of this 8600, is that it has an internal card.
Hope this helps. Khalid |

You might want to try uninstalling the wireless adapter in Device Manager, then letting it reinstall on reboot. That has worked for me on a few laptops.
