Connect to Router but no Internet

If a laptop is connecting to the router, but not getting internet, what troubleshooting steps should I take? This is assuming the modem and router are working properly. I know that if two anti-virus programs are installed it can cause this. What other possibilities are there?

Its wireless. Don't know wireless card or router. I freind is going to bring it by this week. She has tried using it in a number of places like school, library, etc. so Im assuming its the computer, not the router.

You can test it wired and wireless on your router, but she has to try it wired on hers, and see if other computers work on her router.

if is wireless does the WPA or WEP key type in right? if is not right, you might connected but is at limited access it depends how your router set up. also how many user on that router?

if is campus or pub shared router; you need to go to the home page to read the agreement and you accept the guide line before you able to use it. but anyway check the following.

1. check the wireless card driver, see there any updated version

2. double check the router and the wireless card WPA or WEP key see is the one you type in

3. like GLC said try to hook up to the LAN cable and see the computer able to get on the network or internet.
