Dell laptop, shutting off the lights ????

My buddy has a Dell I think he called it an XP. It has these stuoid lights all over it even on the back of the lid. He said there is no way to shut them off, true or false ??

Is there an easy way I can do it for him ??

An exact model would sure help. In fact, if you can get the model or the service tag number, you can look it up on Dell's support site, get the manual, and figure it out yourself.
