Buying a laptop... what to get

One of my friends is buying a laptop...

He asked me if he should upgrade the 6gb ram to 8gb ram or if he should upgrade the 500 gb disc to 640 gb.

First off I'm thinking that is far more than you would ever need in a laptop but I told him that he should upgrade the disc because anything over 4 gb of ram isn't going to do much to the performance and the room you gain will be worth it. He went with the extra 2 gb of ram "because of the stuff he read online".

but the programs he is looking to run are the same that I am currently running on a 5 year old machine with a slower processor, 1/4 the graphics, 1/4 the ram, and 1/2 the ram. And he has a lower resolution screen which means he will need less of everything to run them.

(they are 3d modeling programs, currently I'm running it and its using about 300 mb of physical ram)

What would you have done?

Based on the limited amount of information - you did good.

When it comes to hard drive - I generally ask - what size drive do you have now and do you intend to do anything differently in the future? If the person current has an 80 gig drive...then almost anything bigger then that will do fine

OH - in other words - ALL of the above....Its cheaper in the long run to get more then what you need today to avoid upgrading next year...
