Laptop monitor won't always light up

Hey guys,

I have an HP dv9933 laptop. Its running Win7. Duel core intel and 4 gigs ram. Recently if I shut it down, when I go to turn it on the display won't light up. It boots to login and everything else seems just fine. In order to resolve the problem I have to reboot it several times. It seems totally random as to when it will finally light up, but once it does it looks just fine. It seems to happen every time I have to shut it down and every time i run into this, it seems to take more and more restarts to get it to finally light up. Over the past 3 months I've been using it to watch movies on my tv via the s-video out, which means I have to set up duel monitor and change the resolution. Not sure if that has anything to do with the problem. I've been just keeping it running as much as possible (putting it to sleep at night instead of off) but its a laptop and sometimes I can't keep it on wall power

I have no idea if this is a display issue or the video. the video is onboard nvidia 8600M with the newest driver. If anyone could please help I'd really appreciate it! I feel as though my laptop is slowly dieing before my eyes Let me know what other information you need and I will post here.

If you can consistently power a separate monitor or tv off the laptop, chances are the video on the mobo is ok. That leaves the lcd panel, connecting cable or the inverter as the 3 most probable causes of the problem. Inverters are cheap and relatively easy to replace. I'd try that first. Pick up a new one off ebay.

In full agreement with PR here... Sounds like the inverter board to me... same symptoms as my desktop monitor.... aside from the fact that with a desktop monitor, you can just power down the monitor and power it up again. It started with having to power on and off about half a dozen times.. then a dozen times.. then two dozen.... I replaced the caps on it and it worked fine again.... until about a month ago... I heard another cap fizzle (should have just changed them all).... but now I cannot visually identify which one(s) are bad... ordered a new board and it works again.

Thanks a lot for the replies! Atleast it sounds like it's a fix-able problem and the mobo isn't dieing. I will go from there. As for now, do you think just closing and opening the screen would be considered "turning off" the monitor? Or do you think I need to do full computer restarts? I'm just wondering incase it happens again and I haven't been able to work on it yet. thanks

You could try... might work, might not... might just put more wear and tear on the cable between the upper and lower halves.

I just noticed that if the computer starts up and the display doesnt light up, if I close it and reopen it the screen turns on, but it all white. If i leave it like that for about 2 minutes the screen turns purple. I don't know if this helps at all. thanks for all the replies and any future ones

Also the problem does not happen when I put the computer to sleep, only on a complete restart.

I just replaced the inverter and the problem seems to still be happening So I guess the connecting cable would be next? thanks.
