Dell Inspirion 7500
To what extent can I upgrade my Dell Inspirion 7500? Can I add memory? Processor? HD? Must any upgrades be done by Dell or can I do them (assuming I know how). I know that I can likely buy a new laptop for the upgrade cost but I am kind of "in to conservation."

Memory and hard drive - that's about it. You can do it yourself. Max ram is 512mb, it has 2 slots, you can put 256mb PC133 SDRAM modules in each, they cost $37.99 each from Crucial.
http://www.crucial.com/store/listpar...07500%20Series http://support.dell.com/support/edoc...iew.htm#memory It appears that the largest supported hard drive is 80gb (NO guarantee on that number), it takes a standard IDE notebook drive. The drive must be removed from the caddy and the replacement put into the caddy. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136129 http://support.dell.com/support/edoc...harddisk_drive Is this worth it? To me, no it's not. Throwing $125 or so into it is not cost-effective. It's not going to run XP well even maxed out, and it won't run Vista or Win 7 at all. EDIT: I have an old IBM Thinkpad T20 with similar specs - it has a 700 MHz P3. I maxed out the ram to 512mb and put Win2K on it. It has a 20gb hard drive. It served me well as an occasional use laptop on the road for several years. It finally got to the point where I was having issues connecting to hotel wifi, the proxies that many of them are using now don't like Win2K. I retired it last spring and it now sits in my truck with a single purpose - GPS with a mapping program and a USB receiver. I tried running it with XP and it was just too slow. I replaced it with a $300 netbook for everything else. Last edited by glc; 03-05-2010 at 10:39 AM. |

Buy the software and USB GPS module. However, you will probably have to buy an older mapping program to be compatible with the hardware and OS. I have Microsoft Streets & Trips 2006 on mine. 2007 and newer requires XP and a DVD drive, 2006 only needs a CD drive and is okay with Win2K.
