Wow... Perfect Timing...
I am on a much needed vacation and I have my laptop along with my camera so I can dump video and pictures onto the laptop.
I used the SD card reader in the laptop yesterday to clear the memory card. I inserted it this evening to pull some pictures off and it's as if the card isn't there. The light doesn't come on and nothing happens. The device manager says the device is working properly. I disabled and re-enabled it. I reinstalled the drivers. I looked into the reader with a flash light and none of the pins are bent or missing. When I pulled the card out the first time after it didn't read I heard a slight click that was unusual but it slides in and out perfectly normal now. Did this thing just break on me at the worst possible time?

Does the card still work in the camera? Do you have a spare card to try? Do you have your camera's USB cable with you?

I'd put that one aside and attempt recoveries when you're home and have time to fiddle with it.
Go to a store and pick up a couple of new ones. They're pretty cheap.

Xena, we haven't established whether it's the card or the reader slot causing the problem. The "click" has me wondering. If the slot is bad, he can use the USB cable or an external reader. If the card is bad, then your suggestion is very appropriate.

It's working now. The card was always working in the camera. I fiddled around with the reader in the laptop some more. I ended up blowing in it a bunch (no compressed air here) and what looked like a tiny hair showed up deep inside. It turned out to be a small piece of wire or something. I used a paper clip and couldn't get it out but I got it out of the way and now it works fine.
