Prob with old Presario X-1000; Time to replace?

My wife uses an old Presario X-1000 running Win XP that we've replaced the battery and hard drive when they wore out.
She usues it almost exclusively for word processing, web surfing through our home wireless network, watching DVD's and streaming video (Hulu etc) and it does a fine job with that.

Lately when charging it's developed a high pitched whine. Is this a death toll or a simple matter.
She's thinking of replacing it, but it's a shame to replace what otherwise meets her needs well.

I've been looking at the low end lap tops at New Egg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834114805

Any thoughts, suggestions? She's handicapped and really only uses it at home so battery life and weight aren't issues. Sound quality would be a plus as she watches movies. Larger screen for same reason. We like to keep our tech purchases for years and only upgrade as needed. We're in the Eastern USA. I'm comfortable doing minor upgrades (I changed the harddrive on the old one, am willing to add memory).

Thanks!

None of the above. For reliability, stick with Asus, Dell, or Lenovo laptops.
