What Nvidia chips were overheating?

Hi all.

I recall some months ago a problem with certain Nvidia laptop graphics chips/cards that were overheating and failing at an astounding rate. Can anyone tell me the exact Nvidia models/series that were affected?

My sisters' Acer 5630 laptop has a Geforce Go7300 card in it and she's having problems with the graphics adapter. I am wondering if hers is a part of the problems I recall.

Many thanks.

If I'm not mistaken there were only two family of gpus which were labeled as "defective" were
Nvidia G84 and G86s. Since your sister's card is using G73 gpu's, I do not believe that this would be an issue. Only Dell and HP had recalls due to these defective gpu's. If you would kindly explain and provide more info, then we could help you with the problem.

Thanks guys. The quick reply is definately appreciated.

A few days ago, the laptop displayed a message that the graphics adapter had stopped working and the display flickered a bit. This comes after a few years of use with no similar issues at all. She has since had a similar message/symptoms twice in the past 3 or 4 days.

I found an update for the graphics driver and Sis installed it a few minutes ago. The previous version was a few years out of date. I don't know if a driver update has worked or not yet, but I'm really curious as to why this would become an issue now "out of the blue".

Thoughts?

Hardware failures are more pronuonced through freezing and comlpete loss of a signal and do not readily come with impending announcements. This is more related to a software issue which I would guess your driver update may have resolved.

That's encouraging for sure. I'll wait and see what the reports back to me are....

Thanks for the assistance.

No. I've never opened that (or any) laptop. Obviously, this would be a good thing to do?

Generally speaking, is opening up and cleaning a laptop an event or is it somewhat straightforward?

You can often do a good enough job by blowing air into all the vents you can find. You may need something stronger than a wimpy air can though.

Ok. Thanks GLC. Next time I'm over for a free dinner , I'll have a go at it.

Incidently, no probs with the lappy since the driver update done yesterday. So far so good.
