ThinkPad fan died
The fan on my wife's laptop has died. She gets a fan error message on startup and an observation of the fan on the underside of the case shows it isn't working when the laptop is started. It is a ThinkPad R40 Type 2682. How hard is it to replace the fan and where can I get one? Or would it be better to let a pro do the job?

Well first you'd have to find the amperage, voltage, and size of the current fan. Then find one that's similar in those 3 aspects. On installation you'd just have to pay attention to where the fan connector is located on the laptop as well as how to screw in the new fan, then I'd think your good to go.
However I'm not sure how easy it is to find a new fan, so you might have to contact the manufacter to see if they sell fan's separately. If not then I'd take it to a local repair shop (not Geek squad).

Thinkpad exact replacement fans should be widely available online. You can go to the Lenovo site and download the service manual for that model laptop, and the FRU (part) numbers for all the components are in the manual along with instructions.

Considering that you can easily download service manuals for all Thinkpads and parts are easy to get, I wouldn't worry. I just replaced the backlight inverter in my 10 year old T20 and it cost me a whopping $9.18 including shipping. I had to strip it down to almost nothing to change it with the aid of the manual.
