Asus M60J-A1: No sound when using Blu-Ray with HDMI

I just got my new Asus M60J-A1 laptop. It has the i7 processor, 4GB ram, 500Gb hdd and a Blu-Ray/DVD Burner. Everything seems to work well with the exception of the Blu-Ray player when using the HDMI output to my HD TV. Using the included software "AI Touchmedia" or "WinDVD8" I am able to play DVD with no problem, sound and picture are fine on both the laptop and TV. When playing a Blu-Ray disk I get picture and sound on the laptop but picture only on the TV. I've downloaded the updates for both AI Touchmedia and WinDVD8 but still the same issue.

I've been in contact with Asus Support and they just read from a book on what to do. They are of absolutly no use and don't known their own product. So far I've removed and re-installed the software several times. Done a full system restore, updated drivers and still have the no sound issue. I'm wondering if the software they supplied is not compatable with my laptop Blu-Ray player. Can anyone suggest a free Blu-Ray player software so I can do a little more testing?

Maybe the Blu-Ray burner needs a firmware update?

I suspect this may be the case. Asus is not able to tell me what make of Blu-Ray rom was installed. they keep telling me to update the driver. They also can't tell me which driver to install. I may have to disassemble the laptop to see what brand of player is installed. Is there a generic firmware that I can use?

No............

When you expand the tree at DVD/CD-Rom Drives, what do you have in there? NOT the properties, the line item listing.

OEM drive, LG doesn't provide firmware. If Asus doesn't have a firmware update there isn't one.

Angry Fire

After 6 calls and an email to Asus Customer Support I still have a non working Blu-Ray player. I was told by Asus that they are not the manufacturer of the Blu-Ray drive, its made by LG and therefor I have to search the internet for a firmware update on my own. They were not even able to give me a link to the Firmware. I am not an IT guy. I don't really know what firmware does and don't have any idea on how to install it even if could find it. I am now a really upset and pissed off customer with a 4 week old $1700.00 notebook that does not work as advertized. From what I've read on the internet I'm not the only person with this problem. I just can't find a fix.

Have you checked the sound settings on Windows?

Maybe there's a setting that needs to be set to send the audio output to HDMI instead of SPDIF?

Found this on another forum:

Had the same problem with a HDMI connection between a Sony 64-bit laptop running Windows 7 and a Sony HDTV. Got the picture to transfer from the laptop to the TV but without the sound. After trying all kinds of advice, I stumbled on the answer and can't remember now how I found it, but here it is: Turn off the laptop and connect the HDMI cable between it and the TV. Set the TV INPUT to the same HDMI port you made the connection to. (There are four HDMI ports on my TV.) Turn on the laptop and do what you did before to get the laptop screen on the TV. Then look in the Notification Area of the laptop (lower right end of the Task Bar on the desktop screen) and find the little symbol that says "Show hidden icons" when you mouse over it. Click on that and mouse over the iccns that pop up until you find one that says "HDMI." (It won't be there unless you've turned things on as above.) DOUBLE click the icon and a box will appear with two sound devices pictured on it. The microsoft device will be set as the default, Highight the other device and click on "Set default" just below the pictures. Then click OK. You'll be in business. Note that sound on the laptop will work normally after you disconnect from the TV with this new default setting.

The way I read the original post, audio does work over HDMI with everything except Blu-Ray movies. Am I misreading this?

Just noticed something - does your WinDVD have the "Plus Blu-Ray" update pack?
