Are you looking for a full-blown laptop, or a netbook?

David asked what software you want to run, not operating system. What is it going to be used for and what are your expectations?

You download drivers from the motherboard or PC manufacturer's website.

Now is this heavy photoshop use, or just light red-eye fixing? When you said HD movies, do you mean editing or just watching? If watching, blu-ray, or HD downloads? IWith your budget, I would say to look at Acer or Toshiba, they both provide nice, economical laptops that will serve your purpose well.
