netbook or notebook?
My old acer aspire 1300 is starting to show its age very much ( about 9 years old) . I initially thought to replace it with a 10 inch netbook, but after having seen
a 10 inch acer model in a local shop, those screens are just too small for me (bad eyesight) I found these 2 models on a local shop, one 12 inch netbook, and a 15 inch notebook for the same price ASUS PRO5DIJ-SX481V - T3300 BE15.6"/2G/320G/Shared/W7Pr € 499 ASUS Eee PC 1201PN Windows 7 Azerty BE Black € 499.00 is there a big difference performance wise between these 2 ? they both have 2gb ram, 5400 rpm hd, but the cpu and gpu are different. I use it mostly to get my music from network HD to my home stereo (wired network) for the rest reading acrobat documents and webpages. Can this netbook run youtube video's properly for instance? for all photoshop and 3D stuff etc i have a fairly powerful desktop pc i don't take it out of the house much, maybe once a month, or on holidays. "expected lifespan" is also quite important for me as i don't want replace it every few years any opinions on wich might be better? on the one hand the smaller netbook sounds good to me, but at 12 inch its maybe already too bulky to carry around in my hand. (i haven't been able to find one in the flesh so far, only 10inch demo models in the shops) on the other hand, if the notebook is considerably more powerful, i guess it will last me much longer before it becomes obsolete

Since you said you eyesight is poor, youre going to want something with atleast a 13" screen. Even netbooks with the 10" screen are starting to come with 1366x768 resolutions, which you would have difficulty seeing. 13" to 15" screens have the same resolution, which means everything would be bigger and easier for you to see.

i could take a look at a 12 inch model today, and i have to conclude that its still just a bit too small to be really good for me.
i found one 13 inch asus (that is already quite a bit over my initial price range ) is this one good? ASUS UL30A-QX159V Intel SU 7300 4GB 500GB notebook :: Loveno I.T. they also sell these 2 more expensive models but i'd have to wait some months untill they get cheaper ASUS UL30JT-RX046X Intel Core i3 330UM 4GB 500GB notebook :: Loveno I.T. ASUS U35JC-RX077V Intel Core i5 450M 4GB 500GB notebook :: Loveno I.T. any opinions on these 3 ? is the cpu and gpu on the cheaper model still good enough for the next years? i will be using it for another 10 years if it lasts that long

The cheaper one will serve your stated needs, but it won't be a gamer.

thanks, i don't need it for any sort of gaming, as long as it can play video properly, i'm happy with it.
so i'll be keeping a lookout for the cheapest one. |

The Intel SU series has plenty of power to handle videos. The only processors that don't are the original Atoms.

My newest laptop has an SU4100, which is a dual-core Pentium 1.3GHz 2MB cache 800FSB. It has no problem at all with video. The Atom in my MSI Wind U120 chokes while watching video if its encoded in anything other than HTML5.

I have an Asus UL50VT which is similar to the UL30a you are looking at (same processor) and it is plenty fast for what you are doing. Asus includes a desktop gadget that overclocks the Cpu to 1.7Ghz should you need/want to. If battery life is important to you, you'll love it. The switchable graphics is great; you get awesome battery life on the integrated Intel graphics but you are not limited to slow graphics.
It is very portable due to it's great battery life, thin profile, and it doesn't get near as hot on your lap as any other laptop I've every used. Plus that one is a 13 inch so it'll have an even smaller size than mine.

Netbooks are great to have for light traveling. At there price....having one (no matter what else you have) can be good. Eyesight issues is the one thing that can eliminate the possibility though.

A netbook is all I use when I am away from home - I'm on one right now.
