Toshiba laptop
My partner has a toshiba laptop, model --- "Satellite 2450-101".
She wishes to change the boot sequence using the "HW Setup" in the control panel. Unfortunately, the supervisor password is needed to access the utility, and she cannot remember it after several years. She wishes to use the recovery disc, but the boot sequence is not set to boot from a CD Rom first. The HW Setup, allows the boot sequence to be changed. My question is, how do we delete the unknown password? Many thanks Jack |

You may be able to open the back of the laptop and find the battery for the CMOS (usually a round, silver watch type battery) and remove it, wait for a few minutes then reinstall. This should reset the CMOS and clear the password.

Many thanks for the fast reply, however, the password is within Windows, and is accessed from the control panel.
I will have a look anyway when I see her later this evening. Jack |

I have just driven over, (there now) and had a look. There is no access to the CMOS battery.

You have me confused. Which password are you talking about? The BIOS setup password is the one that would prevent you from entering the BIOS to change the boot sequence, you can't change the boot sequence from within Windows.
Does the laptop have access to a boot menu when you press F12 before Windows starts loading? If not, then enter the BIOS and change the boot sequence there. There may not be EASY access to the CMOS battery, you may have to do quite a bit of disassembly to get to it. You can google for disassembly instructions for that laptop. Toshiba bios access is very different than most.
Boot the system up and hold down the‘Esc’ key, then press F1 when you get the check system message. You are then in the BIOS Setup and you can make your changes and save and exit by pressing the ‘End’ key. |

In the detailed user manual it tells you to alter the boot sequence by going into the control panel (in windows) and click "Toshiba HW Setup". The boot sequence can then be changed using the controls within those Toshiba utilities. Unfortunately, the HW Setup is password protected, and the manual says to contact the retailer if the word is forgotten.
Holding the "esc" key on boot, also requests the setup password. Jack |

Then it's not a Windows password, it's a BIOS password.
Unfortunately, you are going to have to pay a Toshiba service center to clear that password. It requires specialized equipment. |
