Help with corrupt file dell xp sp3

Hello I have a dell inspiron 6000 windows xp sp3, I woke up this morning and started up my laptop,,,well tried to, I went through the Dell splash screen and then chose the current operating system, then my screen goes directly to:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\windows\system32\config\system

You can attempt to repair this flle by starting windows setup
using the original setup cd-rom.
Select 'R' at the first screen to start repair.

when I hit any key it goes right back to Dell splash screen and the goes directly back to above screen, I even tried to f8 and then chose the last good config and several other choices, but still went to above screen.

now I never recieved a dell disk and I can't seem to find my backup cd I made. (I really did make one) probably in storage somewhere. I bought this computer in 2006 and had to reload the windows xp system about 2 years

any ideas on where I can go to get the files or startup disk to see what has happened, any ideas on what could have happened, any help at all would be helpful. I appreciate it,,,,thanks............... ragtop

That is usually caused by a failing hard drive. Press F12 immediately on startup and run diagnostics.

No diagnostic utility partition found. To run diagnostics, insert your Dell "drivers and Utilities" CD, then select ok to restart the system aqnd boot of cd.
ok or cancel

i was thinkind hard drive too, but is there any way to (attempt) try to get into it to get what i need, I do not have the windows disk that came with the laptop in case I do get a new hard drive.. I do have the product key though, just no disk

Did you buy this used? If there's no utility partition, it means that the hard drive has been repartitioned. It probably means that the recovery partition is gone too.

You will need a Dell-specific OEM CD to reload windows. The key on the sticker on the case will probably not work with a different CD. However, you can use *ANY* branded Dell XP CD to do it, you can borrow someone else's and it will work. You will need to download drivers from Dell unless you do have the utility CD for the machine.

Best way to get the files you need is remove the hard drive and use a USB adapter to connect it to another machine.

ahh ok

ok now i see, I am gonna get the adapter and see what I am can get / do.
is it possible to do a disc clone this way also, because that would help as the laptops hard drive is a tad over 6 years old, and I am gonna replace it.

also do you think windows 7 would be a good upgrade, while I am at it.

thx.............ragtop

Yes, that adapter can be used to do a clone. However, if you clone it the way it is, the new drive will have the same errors.
