Laptop with a mind of its own
I checked out a Sony PCG-7X1L laptop for a friend who is having issues with it. It appears to have a mind of its own. It seems to me like the keyboard is faulty and one or more of the arrow keys is activating at random times. For example, it will work fine then suddenly she cannot scroll down because it keeps returning to the top of the page. Also, while typing, the cursor will move to the begining on the field and all typed characters end up in reverse order.
I'm thinking it's the keyboard which is available for $30 on Amazon. Before I have her order one I wanted to get some other opinions. I don't believe there is any malware on the PC. Scans come up clean. Are there any other possibilities? The laptop is several years old so I don't want her dumping money into it but $30 for a new keyboard is not a big deal if it fixes the issue.

Can you try an external keyboard? That would surely prove whether it's hardware or software.

Would plugging in an external keyboard disable the internal one? If it doesn't then that wouldn't tell me anything because if the keyboard itself is faulty it could still cause issues with an external keyboard plugged in.

It wouldn't, but if all the keys on the external work, then the internal definitely has a problem; if the external also behaves funny, then it's a software issue (prolly a corrupted driver) that may be resolved by doing a restore back to factory defaults.
