Asus EeePC
I have a chance to buy a used EeePc Model E3605. It comes with a Linux OS.
I was wondering if I could get rid of the Linux and install an old copy of Windows XP Home. I know next to nothing about laptops and could use a little direction on this one. I also have a copy of Vista Ultimate that will be available soon. But, some how I don't think that would work. Is my idea feasible?

No, most likely not, if it's one of those first EeePC's that came with a 10 GB SSD hard drive. I tried doing exactly the same thing for a customer and once the install was done with updates and all, she barely had any space left. And no office suites, or AV, or any other SW but Windows was on. Needless to say, practically no room would be left for personal files.

The obvious question now is: Can I buy and install a new ,much larger HDD?.
Is 500Gb possible? |

Are you willing to spend that much cash on an SSD? You could buy a new laptop with the cost of one of those monsters. Honestly, unless you are getting the machine for free, with the amount of money you're planning of putting into it you could buy the newest EeePC that comes with Windows 7 Starter.
Which EeePC in particular are we talking about here, as in model? |

Yes I think your right. I just did some price checking and a 64GB drive is CAD$145.00.
It's a Model E3605 |

Google doesn't provide that much info on that model. Do you happen to know what year it came out?

Well, I found the manual: Asus drivers download
Unfortunately, it doesn't list the specs or which year it came out. There's a section on putting XP on it, but again, the one I worked on had that section in its manual too. It *is* possible to install XP Home and run it (XP Pro failed to install) but the manual doesn't tell the user about the hard drive space problem. XP versions of the EeePCs packed larger HDDs. I wonder if you can actually take out the SSD HDD and exchange it. I tried to open that one, but really couldn't (actually, I stopped midways for I did not see the need), so I don't know if these machines' hard drives are FRUs. |

Well, It doesn't look like it's worth the time and effort. I'll just pass on buying it.
Thanks for the help!!!!!! |
