Which Combonation of CPU/RAM & Bus Speed is better?
Hello, I was hoping someone might comment on which laptop is better. They are both the same price and all other aspects are the same-
I am a bit conused. So the CPU is "slower" on the Gateway, but it's system bus speed is better, and so is its RAM. So I really don't know, overall, which one is better? I have also listed my current laptop which I find is fine. I don't game or anything. But I still want the best I can get. Thanx! Gateway Athlon II P320 Benchmark=1285 cpu speed=2.1 GHz System Bus Speed=1066 MHz RAM=4 GB DDR3 Video=ATI Radeon HD 4250 Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit OR HP Intel pentuim Dual Core T4500 Benchmark=1588 cpu speed=2.3 GHz System Bus Speed=800 MHz RAM=3 GB DDR2 (expandable to 8) Video=Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500M Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit Thank you!! ******************************************************** compared to my current Toshiba Satellite Athlon II Dual Core M320 Benchmark=1183 CPU speed=2.1 GHz System Bus Speed=?? RAM=3 GB type=?? Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit PS- I am returning that Netbook in my signature. It is actually UNACCEPTABLY slow even when it does work, but the wireless doesn't work and apparently that is a known problem with these acer's.

Between the two I would prefer the Gateway. It has 4gig of ram, uses DDR3 and has a seperate video card. The HP is only boasting 200mhz more in cpu speed and benches better. That may be due to a larger cache with the pentium processor.
Real world performance is not neccesarily relative to bench scores. It will depend on the application being used whether one pc outperforms the other. I would say they are mostly equal competitors.

If you want the best, you won't get Gateway or HP.
![]() Seriously though, both companies aren't what they used to be and I would avoid both. I would probably go with Lenovo or maybe Asus.

Interesting read and good reference on that link, David; thanks for posting.
I'm surprised at Sony attaining such a high place, their laptops have to be the most bloatware-loaded of the bunch I've gotten to work on. And they're expensive too.

yes, Thank you! I was wondering mostly about the bus speed but that link you provided is better than figuring it out myself, thanx.
I am sorry I forgot about this thread. Both those computers are $429- I think that is about the least expensive decent non-netbook laptop that exists. Anyway, I suddenly thought- for $429, if I spend just $100 more I can buy an IPAD I was playing with one and just the speed of scrolling through documents etc was light years faster than my Toshiba. I am going to wait for the next iteration though.

You can't directly compare CPU and bus speeds between Intel and AMD processors.
Note that Gateway is now owned by Acer, so you are getting Acer quality (or lack thereof). There really isn't a good quality $429 laptop of any brand unless you are looking at netbooks. For quality, you have to look at higher priced business-class laptops such as a Lenovo T-series, Dell Latitude, or an Asus. |
