If your phone has wifi, simply look for an access point and connect.
I doubt that's the answer you are looking for, but vague questions get vague answers. I think we need more details on what equipment you have and exactly what you want to do with it. If you want on-the-road Internet access with a laptop, the best way is with an aircard. |

As glc said, it depends. I personally use a Verizon USB720 aircard with a Cradlepoint CTR350 travel router. Another possibility is to use a MiFi which is an aircard/router in one unit.
What phone do you have? Does it have data access and hotspot capabilities?

Again, exactly what do you want to do? Connect a laptop to the Internet? Connect the Blackberry to the Internet? Do you want to use "public" Wifi or do you want to use cellular data? Who is your cellular provider?
We need details, please. |

I still don't completely understand - are you saying that you want to connect a laptop and a Blackberry using public wifi where available? That's very easy. The Storm 2 has built-in wifi, as do most laptops.
When you are out of wifi range, you will have to use your data plan. You can probably tether the Blackberry to the laptop, or you can get an aircard. |

Yes - you either have to tether the Blackberry to it (with USB or Bluetooth) if your cell provider allows that, or you have to get an aircard from your cell provider. Either way will use your data plan. This also will be dependent on your cell provider's 3G coverage.
I'd suggest you contact a salesperson with your cell provider and discuss your options. Whatever you do, if you aren't near a wifi hotspot any connection is going to have to go through them. There are no other options. The thing your boss bought was probably a Linksys wireless router that has a socket for an aircard. It won't work without an aircard. All it will do is allow several devices to connect to it using its own wifi. Last edited by glc; 11-04-2010 at 07:46 PM. |

The only devices and plans that I can think of are something like Clear Wimax ... Clear Spot | Personal Mobile Internet Hotspot | Clear.com or devices like that. The way it works is to have an internet plan from Clear. It isn't a device that will leverage your existing internet connection or cell phone data plan. So in essence, a plan from Clear (or any other Wimax/4G/LTE provider that has coverage in your area) would be your only internet connection... and you could have a device like that to allow other devices (laptops, cell phones etc) to connect on WiFi. And obviously, you could use the same internet connection at home, if you can get coverage to it.

The Clear plan that gives you 4G coverage on their net and nationwide 3G is $55 a month. I would think that your existing data plan would be no more than that.

Again, it depends on the OP, looking at his cell provider's website (one that i'm not familiar with .. But might be piggybacking on CDMA of someone else bigger like verizon/sprint-nextel-clear) the rates for data seem extraordinarily high for blackberry .. With a very small data allowance. Again, I didn't say it was the ideal solution with Clear, but suggesting that are options to transition away, perhaps, the home Internet connection to a 4G/wimax one, if available. |

I also noticed that Clear offers unlimited data on 4G, but limits transfers when on 3G.
