iPad log on

Planning on purchasing iPad for my travels, etc. Does the iPad have a log-on option to at least protect the info saved on the device? Perhaps even a start up protection?

Yep. There is a password protection to it during power-up or resume after suspend.

NP .. FYI its in
Settings > Passcode Lock
Also worth looking into is Settings > Autolock time.

Keep in mind that the locks on the ipad are very rudimentary and simplistic .. there are a lot of "wonderful" tools out there that will unlock it quite easily. This isn't a deterrent against the Ipad, but a friendly reminder to be careful about the content you store on your Ipad; make sure that you have no misconceptions of the level of security.

Any document I save to the iPad will be a password protected Office document. Not national security secure, but it is something.

Would suggest you make sure that iwork will open MS password protected docs .. I tried searching, but came up with conflicting reports. I have no use for iWork so can't test it out for you.
For password protected PDF documents (right up to 7.0+ compatibility / 128bit AES) .. the mail app doesn't even give you a password prompt .. just wont show anything. iBooks, however, does show a password option and opens it fine.
