I have been out for a bit but now Im back and need help...
I am looking for a laptop 15.6 inch is fine, using it for everything from music rendering, video editing (minor), general everyday, gaming, internet.
I was looking at the HP dv7tse with i-7 720 1.6Ghz, 8gb ddr3 ram, 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 graphics [HDMI, VGA], 320x2 hdd 7,200rpm. What do you guys think? Will this perform well? Be fast? Good sale on it right now so Im thinking of getting it. |

HPs are POSes. You need to look at a different brand. Asus comes to mind.

POSes as in reliability? What do you mean? How much would an ASUS comparable to this one cost? I also forgot blu-ray reader drive, wireless-n, hdmi

Pieces of junk. Bottom of the barrel. Quality is subpar. High rate of failure.

Sony, Asus and Apple have the highest ratings for laptops.
There is not a huge difference percentage wise in customer satisfaction ratings between the garbage and the best. http://www.laptopmag.com/mobile-life...#axzz16PQngvk1

There are a lot of satisfied HP customers. There are also quite a few dissatisfied customers. I personally do not trust their laptops.
For a gaming laptop, I prefer Asus and the higher end Dells. Newegg.com - ASUS N61 Series N61Jq-B2 NoteBook Intel Core i7 740QM(1.73GHz) 16" 4GB Memory DDR3 1066 500GB HDD 7200rpm BD Combo ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730 |

All brands can have duds, that's an unfortunate fact. I do get to work on more Acers and HPs and Toshibas than any other brands, though, hence my recommendation.
Of course you can get lucky, just as in Russian roulette. Last edited by Nuclear Krusader; 11-26-2010 at 12:36 PM. Reason: Typo |

My wife has an HP for a year now that she uses for work and multimedia and hasnt had any problems, not as fast as I would like but it serves her well. Laptopmag rates the HP higher than ASUS as well. Besides all that, do I need a core i7? Maybe I should get an Apple?

Definitely! I was going to suggest that, but since most people want cheap, I restrained myself. But for what you want to do (except for gaming), a 15-17" MacBook Pro would be just fine.
And in terms of gaming, Macs DO games. Steam has been releasing games for the Mac for a while now. |

![]() I wont be playing any Black Ops (I have PS3 for that) but I want it to be able to handle some decent games, nothing fancy. 15" will do just fine for me, I dont need a giant screen. My brother just picked up a macbook Pro and he always boasts about his macs (he has two) so I am thinking maybe its time to switch to a mac. Major upside is no viruses!!! Do I need a Quad-core? |

Take a closer look
I know that Macworld uses real games for their benchmarking. With Macs using Intel processors and nVidia GPUs, they have become a gaming platform as well. I don't play 3D games on mine, as I have the 13" model and the graphics are modest. |

I have been at the apple website plenty of times, yes they are plenty expensive but, from everyone I ask they are worth it. I just want a laptop that is fast. I use music software like Fruity Loops, and some consumer friendly video editing stuff. Apart from that I want it to handle the simple stuff like interwebs, youtube, music, and the occasional game (not graphically intense like Black Ops or anything).

Check your software manufacturers' websites; if the software you need works with Mac, then nothing else needs to be said.
Yes, they're more expensive than your average Windows machine, but you don't have problems with viruses, the updates are well organised and packed and the updater isn't nagging you all the time, no balloons notifications for everything you do that the system doesn't like, and no preloaded crapware to keep the price down. Also, they all come with recovery media: no stupid "secret" partitions for system recovery or paying extra to get the discs from the manufacturer. |

It'll increase. Other games that are not sold via Steam are available too, such as Neverwinter Nights 2. In addition there are lots of games that, although not being intensive 3D are very entertaining. I just rediscovered adventure gaming on the Mac, a genre that has been dead on the PC for years.
