Kindle
I have a relative who has wanted one for years. I am thinking of getting one for her. It would be between the $139 version or the $189 (if need be).
Does the cheaper version need a wireless connection? She has access (somewhat) to a wired connection (part of the day), but no wireless. What I need to know is if the cheaper version will download books as is, does it need an existing connection for use and if so, does it need to be wireless, or can you plug in to a wired one? At one point I had heard the connection was built in, but that might have been the previous models. I am not sure how to take some of the things on Amazon's descriptions. Thanks. The $139 version is wi-fi only (needs internet plus wireless router), the $189 version is wi-fi and 3g. My wife has the first generation Kindle and love's it. For xmas, I'm getting her the $189 model.

Thanks. The cheaper one was going to be a bit rich for my blood, yet I might go for the $189 one anyhow. She likes to read, and although I personally hate DRM and media being tied to a device, she isn't one to hang onto books, but sells them to Half Price Books. With the loss she is taking on books, it wouldn't take too long to make it worthwhile no matter what the future holds with it.

Go for the $189 one - the 3g is free, Amazon pays for it.

Nook is coming out with a new version. I saw it at Barnes and Noble. It was pretty nice. Barnes and Noble apparently has the best selection of newer books.

I got the $189. If that still isn't enough (I presume she can get books with it now), then she will have to get together with me to get a book (but I am not wireless) or go to McDonalds (which I had thought of when I got it). I didn't think of Starbucks. so that will give her another option.
