I have a need for a handheld gps for a rough layout of about 100 acres of proposed construction. I know there are gps survey systems that would do this, but I don't need the centimeter accuracy. After the rough clearing is completed, I can use a total station to place the exact points.
From what I've found, some handheld gps devices can accept inputed coordinates, which I will need to establish the projected locations. What I haven't found is enough information to decide if I'm wasting my time. Otherwise, if anyone has experience, or information, I sure would appreciate some advice, or links. Thanks |

I use GPS for a living. With a WAAS handheld you can get about 2 to 3 meters of accuracy. All non-automobile type handhelds can accept Latitude and Longitude inputs.
You are correct in your thinking with a survey grade GPS. You could rent one if you ever needed 1 cm precision. If you ever want to establish a property line that is considered unbiased with an adjoining neighbor then you would need to hire a surveyor to set survey stakes into the ground. I had to do this for building a fence once.

Thanks. That's the information I needed.
Two to three meter accuracy is acceptable for what I intend to accomplish. The area is covered with scrub trees and brush that is just the right height to prevent line of sight for a total station. With a handheld GPS, I can rough in the clearing to establish points without a drawn out survey requiring chain saws, machetes and lots of mosquito spray. |
